Nira Cooray has spent more than two decades honing her skills as a professional industrial hygienist and doing so in a socially responsible manner. She has served as an OSHA Compliance Officer and consultant with HIOSH, for the Hawaii State Department of Labor and as senior consultant for Bureau Veritas North America, Inc. In addition, Ms. Cooray is an adjunct instructor for industrial hygiene at Honolulu Community College’s Occupational and Environmental Safety Management program teaching the sampling technique course OESM 208 Techniques of Industrial Hygiene.
She has conducted a multitude of industrial hygiene assessments in a variety of industries including construction, shipbuilding, manufacturing, university laboratories, healthcare and hazardous waste. An accomplished speaker, Nira Cooray has presented at the Hawaii Governor’s Biennial Health and Safety Conference since 1998.
She holds two Master degrees from the University of Hawaii, one in Environmental Health (1993) and the other in Chemistry (1989). She is also a recipient of the Superior Performance Award (1994) from the Hawaii State Department of Labor. Ms., Cooray is a Diplomate Member of the Board of Safety Professionals, a Certified Industrial Hygienist and a Certified Safety Professional. She is a past president (2008) of the AIHA Hawaii Local and remains an active board member in this local chapter.
During her almost two decades as a safety and health professional, she has had the opportunity to conduct industrial hygiene assessments
in a variety of industries. She has implemented injury and illness reduction programs, provided training on various safety and health
topics and worked towards improving the safety culture in large organizations through behavior-based training and safety and health
program implementation. She has also conducted comprehensive inspections at four of Oahu’s major healthcare facilities.
